Savio Stories

Jacob* was referred to Savio earlier this year to get help with issues he was having at school and home. His uncle and aunt had recently taken custody of him because his mother was dying from the effects of alcohol and drugs.

When the Savio therapist first met Jacob he was extremely angry. He had a history of violent outbursts, both at home and at school, and was being physically and mentally abusive to his aunt and uncle. He had been referred to Savio as a last resort before the case worker placed him in juvenile detention.

Over the course of three months, the Savio therapist met with Jacob and his aunt and uncle frequently. They discussed ways to provide stability for Jacob and were able to set up an appropriate household structure, and create a safe and loving environment.

At the end of the case, Jacob was following household expectations, participating willingly in both individual therapy and family therapy, and was getting As and Bs in school. He had virtually eliminated all violent outbursts in favor of calmly and rationally discussing issues. In addition, his aunt and uncle had started taking the steps to gain permanent custody and to legally adopt him.

A few weeks ago, the Savio therapist received this note in the mail:

"Thank you for helping Jacob. We are excited to have him in our family. You saw through all of Jacob's pain and helped us all become better people. You really helped us weather a terrible time and now we all have hope for happiness in our future. We are so grateful."
